Collected every other week on your blue or green calendar week. Empty, clean and unbagged is the whole rule.
What goes in the cartROC City Compost
Free year-round food scrap drop-off for City residents. Fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, eggshells, bread and grains.

Weekly curbside refuse pickup. Carts out by 6 a.m. with the lid closed and the handle facing the house.

Furniture, mattresses and large appliances are handled through City bulk collection. Refrigerants need a drop-off.

How collection works
Four rules cover the whole system.

Find your calendar colour
Every address is on either the blue calendar or the green calendar. That colour decides which week your recycling is collected.

Refuse is weekly, recycling is every other week
Your refuse cart goes out every week on the same day. Your blue recycling cart goes out on your calendar week only.

Out by 6 a.m., lid closed
Set carts at the curb by 6 a.m. on collection day, or the night before. Leave three feet between carts and keep them clear of parked cars.

Holidays push everything back one day
When a holiday falls on or before your collection day, that week runs one day late through Saturday.

Common questions
My cart was damaged or went missing. What do I do?
Carts are City property and are repaired or replaced at no charge. Report it and Operations will schedule a swap.
Can I put my recycling out in a bag?
No. Bagged recycling is pulled off the sorting line as trash without being opened. Empty it loose into the cart and take the bag back to a store film bin.
What if my recycling does not fit in the cart?
Flattened cardboard can be set beside the cart. Do not set out loose recyclables in bags or boxes that will blow around.
Do I need to remove caps and labels?
Leave labels on and put caps back on their containers. Loose caps fall through the sorting screens and are lost.
Where do batteries and electronics go?
Never in any cart. Batteries and electronics go to the Monroe County ecopark, free for county residents. Lithium batteries cause fires in collection trucks.
